Chapter 13
Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without Big Momma. It was her favorite time of the year. She loved the hustle and bustle the season would bring. She almost became child-like when she shopped with Mrs. Johnson. Then she would stay up half the night wrapping each present beautifully as if it were on display at a department store.
Our family had endured tremendous losses during the year of 1976, with the death of Daddy, Mr. Johnson, and now Big Momma. I knew 1977 had to be a better year. Yes, it was going to be better because a new life, our child was going to be born.
Mrs. Johnson was in some sort of deep depression. She barely came to the house for a visit. Most nights, the triplets stayed with us. On several occasions after work, I had to pick the triplets up and cook them dinner. After work, Mrs. Johnson went straight home and got in the bed. Her strange behavior extended into the weekends. Sleep was her new best friend. She took off from work so much she used all of her sick days and was now working on her vacation days.
When she decided to go to work, she ignored her coworkers. In her twenty year career at the bank, Mrs. Johnson was a model employee. Mrs. Johnson had an impeccable record. Her evaluations were always superb. But now her supervisor was giving her a bad performance appraisal. Mrs. Johnson had become trapped within herself. She was just going through the daily motions of every day life. Her heart just wasn’t in anything anymore. Just when you think things can’t get any worse, they somehow do.
December 24, 1976 was another horrific day. Grant came running in the house. “Unique! Unique!”
“I’m upstairs in the bathtub. What’s wrong?”
Grant rushed into the bathroom with my robe. “Get out of the tub. Hurry up.”
“Grant, what in the world is wrong with you?”
“Damn it! Unique, just do it!”
“What?”
“I’m sorry, baby. Please dry off and put on your robe and slippers. I need you to come outside with me.”
“Outside?”
“Yes, outside. Hurry.”
I jumped out of the tub, quickly dried off and ran downstairs with Grant. He opened up the front door as a cold harsh wind ripped right through my robe, sending chills up my spine. We stepped out of the doorway and onto the front porch.
“Grant it’s freezing out here. What do you want me to see?”
“Unique, look up the street to Mom’s house and tell me what do you see posted in the front lawn?”
“Oh…my…it’s a for sale sign. Grant it must be a mistake. Your mother wouldn’t think about moving without telling us.”
“Unique, I watched the realtor hammer the sign into the ground. Then Momma came out of the house and shook the realtor’s hand. I never thought I would see this day. I don’t know what I should do.”
“What we are going to do is go up there and find out what is really going on. Come back inside while I put on my clothes.
